RIP Memorial Cards – A Lasting Tribute To Your Loved One

What Happens at a Month's Mind Mass?

A Month's Mind is a Mass offered about a month after a death. It is the quieter gathering after the funeral, and for many families it is when the memorial cards are finally handed out.

The day itself

What to expect

Nothing about it is complicated, and the parish will guide you.

  • About a month after the funeral

The Month's Mind is a Mass offered roughly a month after a death. In practice the date is arranged with the parish to suit a Sunday or an evening Mass, so it may fall a little before or after the exact month.

  • Quieter than the funeral

The funeral itself passes in a blur. The Month's Mind is the calmer gathering — often the first time the family sits together without the crowd and the arrangements of that first week.

  • Announced rather than invited

Most families do not send invitations. The Mass is announced from the altar, in the parish newsletter and among neighbours, and anyone who wishes to come is welcome.

What families have printed

The Month's Mind is often the moment the memorial cards appear, because there has been time to find the right photograph and settle on a verse. See Month's Mind cards for the wording, and what to write on a memorial card if you are still deciding.

Some parishes also read out a list of names, and some families have a small booklet for the Mass. We print Mass booklets to order — those are quoted job by job rather than sold from a price list. Later in the year the same design carries over to a first anniversary card.

Questions about the Month's Mind

Is a Month's Mind the same as a memorial Mass?
It is a memorial Mass, but the name is specific to the one held about a month after the death. Later Masses are usually called anniversary Masses.
Do families print cards for a Month's Mind?
Many do. Some families order their memorial cards in time for the Month's Mind rather than the funeral, because there is no rush and the photograph and verse can be chosen properly. Others hand out the remainder of the funeral cards on the day.
What is usually written on a Month's Mind card?
The name, the dates, the photograph and a verse, with a line naming the Month's Mind Mass — the church, the date and the time. We set that wording out for you on our Month's Mind cards page.
How soon should cards be ordered for the day?
Allow a week or more if you can. Once the proof is approved we print and post within 2–3 business days, so ordering a fortnight before the Mass leaves everyone comfortable. If the date is closer than that, ring us on 053 94 22900.
Is there a Month's Mind for everyone?
No. It is a well-kept custom in many Irish parishes and hardly used in others, and some families choose not to have one. Your own parish will tell you what is usual locally.
