Practical Guidelines for Memorial Cards in Ireland

At RIP Memorial Cards we understand that arranging memorial stationery can feel overwhelming at an already difficult time. These practical guidelines are here to help you make calm, informed decisions — at your own pace.

What is a Memorial Card?

A memorial card (sometimes called an in-memoriam card, remembrance card or funeral card) is a personalised keepsake that usually includes a photograph of your loved one, their name, dates, and a short verse, prayer or message.

In Ireland the most common formats are:

Many families also order matching thank you or acknowledgement cards to express gratitude to those who supported them.

When Should Memorial Cards Be Ordered or Given?

There is no fixed rule. Some families order cards in time for the removal or funeral Mass. Others prefer to wait until the Month’s Mind, the first anniversary, or simply when they feel ready.

Most of our customers order between a few weeks and 18 months after the funeral. Take the time that feels right for your family — people will understand.

Who Should Receive Memorial Cards?

Typically cards are given or posted to:

  • Immediate family and close relatives
  • Friends and neighbours
  • Work colleagues and members of clubs or groups the person belonged to
  • Anyone who offered particular support

Some families also keep a small number aside for people who ask later.

How Many Memorial Cards Should I Order?

A useful starting guide:

  • 50–75 cards – smaller family circle
  • 100–150 cards – most families
  • 200+ cards – larger extended family, community or club connections

We generally recommend ordering a few extra. It is easy to order a small additional quantity later if needed. You can compare quantities and prices in our shop.

Choosing Photographs

Clear, well-lit photographs work best. A recent portrait is ideal, but older meaningful photos can also be beautiful.

Our design team can enhance and clean photos as part of the free design service included with every order. If you are unsure which images to use, simply send us a selection and we will advise. You can also try your photo in our online designer.

Choosing Verses and Wording

You can:

  • Choose one of the verses from our library (each has a unique number — just quote the number when ordering)
  • Supply your own poem, prayer or personal message

Addressing and Posting the Cards

Envelopes are included free with every order.

Many families find it easiest to prepare a simple address list in a document and print labels. Hand-addressing is of course also perfectly fine.

We post the finished cards to you, and you can then distribute or post them as you wish. See our delivery and turnaround details.

Memorial Cards and Thank You Cards – What’s the Difference?

Memorial cards are keepsakes that honour the person who has passed.

Thank you (acknowledgement) cards are sent to express gratitude to those who attended the funeral, sent flowers, Mass cards, or offered support.

Many families order both at the same time.
