Very few families have a perfect, high-resolution photograph ready to go. Here is what we can usually improve, what is harder to fix, and how to send us what you have.

  • What we can usually improve

    Light creases, faded colour, dust marks, minor tears and a soft or grainy scan can generally be cleaned up enough to print well. We can also crop in on a face from a group photo, adjust brightness and contrast, and convert a black and white photo to work cleanly alongside colour text.

  • What is harder to fix

    A very small or heavily blurred photograph enlarged a long way can start to look soft or pixelated once printed — there is a limit to how much detail we can recover that simply is not in the original file. Severe damage, such as large missing sections of a print, may also only be partly repairable.

  • What we will always tell you

    If a photograph is too small or damaged to print sharply, we will say so honestly before you order, and show you exactly how it looks on the proof rather than let you be surprised after printing.

How to send us a photograph

A flatbed scan of a printed photograph, saved as a JPEG or PNG, generally gives the sharpest result. If a scanner is not to hand, a clear phone photograph taken straight on, in good even light, without glare from a lamp or window, usually works well enough. Email it to us or upload it when you order, and our designers will crop, straighten and clean it up as part of the design.

Questions about photographs

Can you fix an old, creased photograph for a memorial card?
In most cases, yes. Minor creases, fading and dust marks can usually be cleaned up so the photograph prints well. Send us the clearest copy you have — a good scan is best — and we will let you know what is achievable before you commit to an order.
Our only photo is small or from a group photo — is that a problem?
It can limit how much we can enlarge it without the print looking soft. We will always show you the cropped and enlarged photograph on the proof so you can see exactly how it will print before approving.
Should I scan the photo or take a photo of it with my phone?
A proper flatbed scan at a reasonably high resolution gives the best result, but a clear, well-lit phone photograph taken straight-on, without glare or shadow, usually works fine too. Avoid photographing it at an angle or in poor light.
Can you turn a black and white photo into colour?
We can colourise some black and white photographs, though results vary depending on the quality of the original. It is worth asking us to look at the specific photograph first.
What file format should I send?
A JPEG or PNG works well for most photographs. If you have the original print, a scan is often better quality than a photo taken of it. Send whatever you have — we will tell you if we need a better copy.
