Six wording examples you can use word for word or make your own, along with who to send a card to and how many you are likely to need. Nothing here costs anything, and we will set whatever wording you choose.

Six ways families word it
Short, longer, religious and non-religious — take whichever sounds like your family.
- Short and traditional
The family of the late Mary Byrne wish to express their sincere thanks to all who sympathised with them in their recent sad loss. Please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation.
- Naming the kindnesses
We wish to thank everyone who called to the house, attended the removal and funeral Mass, sent Mass cards, flowers and messages of sympathy, and supported us in so many quiet ways. Your kindness meant more than we can say.
- With a Mass offered
The family of the late John Murphy gratefully acknowledge all expressions of sympathy received in their recent bereavement. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.
- Non-religious
Thank you for your kindness, your company and your words about Dad. We were held up by the number of people who came, and by everything that was said about the life he lived. From all the Kelly family.
- Thanking the carers
We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for Nan with such gentleness, and everyone who visited her in her last months. Thank you also to all who sympathised with us since.
- Short and personal
Thank you for being there. It made all the difference. — The Nolan family, Gorey.
The names above are placeholders — we set your own names, dates and photograph, and you see it all on a proof before anything is printed.
Who to send one to
- Households who sent a Mass card, a sympathy card, flowers or a donation.
- Neighbours who called to the house, made food, or minded the door.
- Anyone who travelled a distance to the removal or the funeral Mass.
- The priest, the church musicians, the gravediggers and the funeral director.
- Hospital, hospice or nursing home staff who cared for your loved one.
- Work colleagues, club members and anyone who formed a guard of honour.
Five practical notes
- One card per household is plenty — counting households rather than people keeps the number sensible.
- Sign off as the family rather than one person, unless the card is going to someone close.
- The same photograph and border as the memorial card ties the two together; we keep your artwork on file.
- Keep the wording short. Four or five lines on an A6 card reads far better than a full page.
- There is no set time. Most families send them within a few weeks, but later is perfectly normal.

Questions about acknowledgement cards
- What do you write in a funeral acknowledgement card?
- A short line of thanks from the family for the sympathy shown, the name of your loved one, and the date. Many Irish families add that a Mass has been offered for the intentions of everyone who sympathised. The examples on this page can be used word for word or adapted.
- When should acknowledgement cards be sent?
- Most families send them within a few weeks of the funeral, and many send them around the Month's Mind. There is no rule, and nobody minds a card arriving later.
- Who signs an acknowledgement card?
- Usually the family as a whole — for example 'the Byrne family' or 'Mary, Tom and all the family'. Cards to close friends are often signed personally as well.
- How much do acknowledgement cards cost?
- Our acknowledgement and thank you cards start at €45 for 15 cards, with envelopes, design, proof revisions and VAT included. See our thank you cards page for the full quantity bands.
- Can you match them to the memorial cards we already ordered?
- Yes. We keep the artwork from your original order, so the acknowledgement cards can carry the same photograph, verse and border. Once you approve the proof we print and post within 2–3 business days.
