Arranging a Funeral in Ireland
Irish funerals happen quickly — usually within two to four days. Here is what takes place, in the order it happens, and where printed cards fit in without adding to the pressure.
Step by step
The first days
Your funeral director carries most of this for you.
1. Ring a funeral director
The funeral director takes on most of the arrangements — bringing the person into their care, the coffin, the removal, the times with the church and the graveyard or crematorium. They do this every day, and one phone call takes an enormous amount off a family.
2. The death is registered
A doctor provides the medical certificate of cause of death, and the death is then registered with the civil registration service. Where a death is sudden or unexplained, the coroner is involved and the timing changes. Your funeral director will tell you exactly what is needed.
3. The notice goes out
Most Irish families put a death notice on RIP.ie — an independent site we have no connection with — and the funeral director usually places it for you. Local radio and the parish newsletter are still widely used as well.
4. The funeral Mass or service
The parish agrees the time, the readings and the music with the family. This is when a booklet is sometimes printed, and when families decide whether the memorial cards are wanted for the day or later on.
5. Afterwards
The Month's Mind comes about a month later, and acknowledgement cards go out to the people who called, sent Mass cards or travelled. There is no hurry with either.
We are a print house, not a funeral service — so treat this as a plain outline and take your funeral director's word over ours on anything to do with the arrangements themselves.

Memorial cards
Many families order after the funeral rather than before it. There is no rush, and the photograph and verse deserve a calm decision.
Bookmarks and wallet cards
A bookmark for a missal, a wallet card carried in a purse or a wallet. Families often order a smaller number alongside the folding cards.
Acknowledgement cards
Sent weeks or months later to thank the people who called to the house, sent a Mass card or travelled a distance.

- How quickly do funerals happen in Ireland?
- Irish funerals are usually within two to four days of the death, which is faster than in many other countries. That is why so many families order memorial cards afterwards rather than in time for the funeral itself.
- Do we need memorial cards for the funeral day?
- No. Some families like to have them at the church, but most order in the weeks afterwards or in time for the Month's Mind. Taking that time usually gives a better card.
- Who arranges the death notice?
- The funeral director normally places it for you, including on RIP.ie. RIP.ie is an independent service and nothing to do with us — we print cards, we do not handle notices.
- Can you print for us while the funeral is still being arranged?
- We can, but be realistic about time. Once you approve the proof we print and post within 2–3 business days, and post takes its own time after that. Ring us on 053 94 22900 before ordering if the funeral is only days away and we will tell you honestly what is possible.
- What do we send to the people who sent Mass cards?
- An acknowledgement or thank you card, usually matching the memorial card. It is normal for these to go out weeks or even a couple of months later.
